Rohit Chaturvedi
a director’s designerRohit Chaturvedi takes great pride in calling himself ‘a director’s designer’. A definition of self that roots from his ardent belief that apparel and accessories too, have a story to tell. A craftsman adept of handling challenges; offered both by the box office and the new wave, Rohit has only unfurled victorious. Equally through commercial and independent cinema.
The works of Rohit are quite an array of motifs on a myriad fabric. While there is Rohit Shetty at one end, there is Sudhanshu Saria at the other. Then again, a decade in the industry is too soon to define oneself. What with three diverse movies, styled by him, lined up at the Jio Mami 2016 showcase! Of which two landing up with the laurels, he isn’t in a hurry to get himself a ‘label’ yet.
“We need designers who can add subtext and layers to the story through their design,” says Alankrita Srivastava (Lipstick Under My Burkha, 2016). Rohit, according to her, is excellent with the detailing and the authenticity of ‘the look’. Konkana Sen Sharma is liberal in her applause, as well. “From his references to his dedication, Rohit has been an absolute pleasure to work with,” she says.
Only when every colour, pattern and button looked into as a matter or hygiene; the screenplay is styled and the emotion is draped. When the cinema and the clothes are all one that for him is a job well done. “A lady from a shooting neighbourhood said to one of the actors ‘aap bilkul hamare jaise dikhte ho (you look just like us)’. That’s when I knew, I had my job right,” he says.
